Rules and Regulations of the Road

Crossing Intersections

  • Obey the Traffic Officer, traffic signal or road markings.
  • At traffic circles, yield to vehicles approaching on your right.
  • At four-way and three-way stops, the vehicle, which stops at the stop line first, may proceed through the intersection first.
  • Do not obstruct the flow of traffic when entering the intersection or crossing a lane when turning.
  • When turning left:
      Signal your intention to turn left,
      Move to the left of the road when preparing to turn,
      Adjust your speed and merge into traffic when safe to do so.
  • When turning right:
      Signal your intention to turn right,
      Move to the right side of your lane to allow vehicles behind to pass on your left,
      Yield to oncoming traffic,
      Cross the centre-line of the road before turning to place you on the left of the road into which you are turning, except when turning into a one-way road,
      Keep to the left of any traffic island or barrier as you turn right.

Signals 

  • Signals must be clearly visible.
  • Signal timeously when you want to:
      Stop
      Reduce speed
      Turn left or right
      Change lanes
      Move to the left or right of the road prior to turning or stopping.
  • Hand signals are not allowed on a freeway except in an emergency.
  • The following hand signals are used when driving a vehicle without indicators or brake lights:
      Stop
      Reduce speed
      Right turn

Freeways

  • Pedestrians and animals are not allowed on the freeway.
  • The following vehicles are not allowed on the freeway:
      Animal-drawn vehicles.
      Agricultural vehicles such as tractors electrically powered vehicles pedal cycles.
      Motor tricycles and quadrucycles.
      Motorcycles with an engine capacity less than 50cc.
      Special vehicles with mass less than 230kg designed for the disabled
  • The following actions are not allowed on the freeway:
      Stopping a vehicle, except in an emergency.
      Hand signals, except in an emergency.
      Driving in the right-hand lane after the driver behind has signalled an intention to pass you.

Right of Way

  • Right of way allows a person to proceed along a road.
  • Emergency vehicles sounding a siren or bell or flashing a red or blue light have right of way. Move to the left to allow such vehicles to pass.
  • At an intersection controlled by a STOP or YIELD sign, give way, to traffic on the other road.
  • At a traffic circle:
      Vehicles approaching from the right have right of way unless a Traffic Officer or road sign indicates otherwise,
      Indicate your intention to turn when exiting the circle.
  • When turning right at an intersection, give way to oncoming traffic travelling straight on.
  • Right of way is given to pedestrians, who are:
      Crossing the road you are about to turn into.
      On a driveway crossing a pavement.
      On a pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights even if the signal turns green for vehicles.
  • At a three-way or four-way stop, the vehicle that stops first is the first to drive on.
  • Give way to buses exiting a bus stop.
  • Do not drive in lanes designated for buses and taxis.
  • Pedal cycles have right of way in designated cycle lanes.
