The rule of the road
- The rule of the road is to drive on the left-hand side of the road.
- On a two-way road, vehicles must not encroach on the right-hand side unless overtaking or instructed to do so by a Traffic Officer or road sign.
- This requirement does not apply on a one-way road.
- On a divided road. i.e. whenever a thoroughfare is divided into two or more roads by a space, barrier or separating strip, vehicles may drive only on the left-hand side of the division.
- Such a division may only be crossed at an appropriate opening in the space, barrier or separating strip; or at an intersection provided it is not prohibited by a road sign.
Overtaking
- Overtake slower vehicles ahead of you on the right-hand side of the road.
-
Proceed only if:
It is not prohibited to do so by a road sign or marking.
It is safe to do so i.e. you do not obstruct or endanger oncoming traffic.
You have indicated your intention to change lanes.
- You may only overtake on the left-hand side if:
The vehicle being overtaken is turning right or signalling to turn right.
The road is one way and wide enough for two or more lanes of traffic.
The road is divided into two or more lanes.
- You may not overtake:
When approaching the summit of a rise or hill.
When approaching a curve in the road.
If visibility is obstructed or restricted.
A vehicle which has stopped at a pedestrian or railway crossing.
On the verge or shoulder of the road.
At an intersection.
When it is prohibited by a solid barrier line or road sign.
- When overtaking stationary vehicles:
Slow down.
Be alert to passengers entering or leaving the vehicle.
- When being overtaken:
Move as far to the left-hand side of the road as is safely possible.
Do not accelerate.
On a multi-lane road, move into left lane to allow driver behind to pass on the right.
The general rule is therefore: KEEP LEFT, PASS RIGHT
General Speed Limits
The following are maximum speeds unless otherwise indicated by a road sign:
- 60km/h on an urban road i.e. in built-up areas.
- 100km/h on a rural road i.e. outside built-up areas.
- 120km/h on a freeway (minimum speed is 60km/h).
- 80km/h for goods vehicles or combinations of vehicles that exceed 9 000kg.
Traffic Lanes
- Drive within the lane lines - do not straddle two lanes.
- Change lanes only when necessary and it is safe to do so.
- Signal your intention to change lanes.
