Basic Vehicle Controls and Instruments
1. STEERING WHEEL
Turn steering wheel to control the direction in which the vehicle is moving.
2. ACCELERATOR PEDAL
Use right foot on pedal to control speed of vehicle. Press to increase speed,
release to decrease speed.
3. HAND BRAKE LEVER
Pull lever up to prevent vehicle from moving when brought to a standstill.
Serves as an emergency or parking brake.
4. FOOT BRAKE PEDAL
Use right foot on pedal to slow down or stop the vehicle.
5. CLUTCH PEDAL
Use left foot to depress pedal when changing gears. (Not present in automatic
vehicles)
6. GEAR LEVER
Change gears to accommodate speed at which vehicle is travelling or to reverse the vehicle.
Floor shift gear lever is located on floor of vehicle while column shift gear lever is located on the side of the steering column.
7. INDICATOR LEVER
Push up or down to indicate the direction in which you intend to turn the
vehicle.
8. REAR VIEW MIRROR
Used to observe traffic behind your vehicle.
9. SPEEDOMETER
Shows the speed at which the vehicle is travelling.
