Stephen powers his way to championship glory
Monday, 28 November 2011
The WesBank Super Series hit a thrilling climax at Zwartkops on Saturday
as Engen Xtreme driver Michael Stephen powered his way past Johan Fourie to
be crowned the 2011 Bridgestone Production Car champion in no uncertain
terms.
Stephen (Engen Xtreme Audi S4) entered the day’s racing a single point
behind Fourie (IndyOil Audi S4) in the race for championship honours. There
was however no stopping the Engen Xtreme driver who powered his way to three
victories in four races on the day to surge past Fourie, securing the title
by 21 points.
Port Elizabeth–resident Stephen was ably assisted by Engen Xtreme
teammate Tschops Sipuka (Engen Xtreme Audi S4) who raced superbly on the
day, often protecting Stephen from some of his rivals.
Engen VW Polo Cup
There was also race day success for the Engen Xtreme Team in the Engen VW
Polo Cup. Kosie Weyers (Engen Xtreme VW Polo) triumphed in both heats to bag
the overall win for the day.
Weyers’ scintillating late season form allowed him to secure second place
behind champion Devin Robertson (Sparco/Big Boss Auto). Robertson had the
title sewn-up two rounds back.
The Cape Town-based Weyers looks destined for greater things with his
runner-up finish in this year’s event meaning he has made excellent
year-on-year progress ever since joining the Engen Xtreme Team in 2009.
After being crowned Rookie of the Year in his debut season, he followed it
up with a third place finish in the 2010 season. Going one better in 2011,
it will take a brave punter to bet against the talented flame-haired tyro
being crowned champion in 2012.
Red Cross Children’s Hospital
After another very successful motorsport season, the Engen Xtreme Team
has again accumulated a significant amount of championship points. 735 to be
exact. With Engen donating R140 for every point accumulated by the Engen
Xtreme Team drivers in the 2011 season to the Red Cross Children’s War
Memorial Hospital Burns Unit, the young burns patients at the world renowned
facility will this year benefit to the tune of R 102 900.
