Engen fuels basketball coaching development
US Coaches return to SA
Friday 11 September2009
Durban is the backdrop of the annual Engen US Coaches Tour Coaching Seminar to
be held at the Durban University of Technology from 27 to 30 September 2009.
This year marks the Tours' sixth consecutive year in the country, with the
popularity of the tour growing with each year.
Due to the resounding success achieved last year when the first-ever Engen
Coaches Seminar in Pietermaritzburg, basketball coaches countrywide are eagerly
anticipating the four legendary WNBA accredited basketball coaches to impart the
latest basketball techniques and coaching tips during the four day coaching
seminar.
The accomplished team of US basketball coaches armed with the task to share
their expertise, is led by Joyce Jenkins, a former basketball star and current
president of Future Incorporated, who has been integral part of Engen's role in
developing the sport at youth levelsince the inception of the tour six years
ago. Joining her is an all-star team of basketball coaching royalty that
includes Marvin Harvey (Chairman and Founder of Harvey's Shooters Touch Academy
and former Coach of the WNBA Houston Comets), Carl Mattei (Head Coach, Regis
Jesuit High, Aurora Colorrado) and YeRushia Brown (WNBA veteran and former
Furman University basketball standout).
Fifty amateur coaches from across the country have been invited to attend the
four-day seminar endorsed by the Kwa-Zulu Natal Basketball Association. The
primary aim of the seminar is to enhance the technical knowledge of amateur
coaches from various regions; however this year the focus will be on the ability
of coaches to effectively arrange and conduct basketball training/practice
sessions.
The seminar will include a number of essential basketball training and skill
development techniques, ranging from basics such as defence, offence and
shooting to the more complex fundamentals of coaching including team leadership,
team building and fostering team unity.
Every element of the seminar includes a theoretical and practical session
followed by an open discussion, in which the seminar delegates will be given the
opportunity to pose questions and request further insight into various areas
that were previously presented.
Every seminar delegate will receive a 20-page basketball coaching manual
containing all the information they would need in order to impart the knowledge
they have learnt to other coaches in their local communities. In addition, every
seminar delegate will receive a Marvin Harvey "Get the Shot" coaching DVD and
Engen gift pack.
