Saturday Schools
Twenty-four years ago Engen began to support the education of employees' children. Today the Engen Saturday Schools programme is a flagship CSI initiative, comprising 90% 'external' learners. The programme provides 'booster' tuition in Mathematics, Science and business language for 42 Saturdays throughout the year.
Over the last five years, the Engen Saturday Schools programme has been integrated with our talent attraction programmes, including our bursary scheme and graduate employment programme. In terms of this, some learners are placed in the business on holiday internships and given bursaries in engineering, commerce or IT. They may be offered permanent employment on completion of their studies.
Our first employee intake from the bursary scheme was in 2009. We also facilitate the exposure of non-bursaried students to career events or even other employers. Despite not being awarded Engen bursaries, they may yet be offered employment by us.
A future focus of the Engen Saturday Schools programme will be to further expand its rural footprint (two Eastern Cape rural schools were inducted last year), and to integrate teacher and school management training, to improve school skills and pass rate.
