NSRI
Engen makes an annualn contribution of fuel to the National Sea Rescue Institute
(NSRI), a non-profit organisation, with a fundamental cause and mission to save
lives at sea and on inland waters.
The NSRI which is run by 880 skilled volunteers at 29 bases around the South African
coast and on three inland dams, is reliant on donations and sponsorship to cover
an annual running cost of R17 million.
Engen recently not only renewed, but increased its annual fuel grant by a further
10% - a gesture which has been welcomed with open arms by the NSRI volunteers at
nine of its rescue bases â€" Bakoven, Hout Bay, Strandfontein, Hermanus, Plettenburg
Bay, Wilderness, Richards Bay, Port Elizabeth and Durban - all sponsored by Engen.
The NSRI was established in 1967 as a humanitarian service, at no charge to the
public, and has since carried out 13 814 nationwide operations, rescued 22 762 persons
and saved 2 174 lives.
Engen's support of the NSRI is a commitment to the safety of ordinary South Africans
at sea, those who make a living from the sea such as fisherman and those who use
it for recreational purposes.â€Â
Engen has contributed more than R9 million in fuel to the organisation in 18 years.
Education
Engen is also a sponsor of NSRI's WaterWise education project - a series of workshops
that teach children, predominantly from disadvantaged communities, about basic water
safety.
The aim of the workshops is to teach children what to do in an emergency and to
empower them so that they have the confidence to initiate basic cardio pulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) while they wait for the ambulance to arrive.
