Fire at Engen Refinery extinguished
Tues
day,
03 July 2007
The hydrocarbon fire that broke out at the Akylation unit in the Refinery,
in Wentworth Durban at 06:30 this morning has been extinguished.
The fire was extinguished at 07:45. There were no injuries, the fire risk
was well controlled and the black smoke dissipated at a high atmospheric
level minimising health risks.
The burning material was similar to the gas used to fill cigarette lighters.
The fire occurred during the start up of the refinery. At this stage it is
not known what caused the fire but it will be investigated as mopping up
operations begin and we plot the way forward.
It is expected that the refinery will run at a reduced rate until the damage
is repaired. The extent and cost of the damage are not yet known.
The Alkylation unit encompasses processes for boosting octane in petrol.
