Safety and Environment
Safety
The Safety focus is deeply aligned to the Engen business and its operations. The
role of CSI in this area is to facilitate a shared company-wide approach to this
issue and within this, to identify social investment opportunities that will be
good for our company and will benefit the communities in which we do business.
This approach to the issue of safety is not only crucial for Engen to uphold as
a responsible corporate citizen, but also gives Engen access to new business opportunities
that will create jobs through responsible businesses. Our primary focus is on product
safety and road safety education and awareness.
In road safety Engen supports government's Arrive Alive efforts to curb the road
carnage through its education and awareness campaigns.
As an industry player Engen is the major contributor to Paraffin Safety Association
of Southern Africa. This is in addition to the paraffin safety awareness campaigns,
which are conducted annually through radio and industrial theatre.
Further, our support of the National Sea Rescue is Engen's commitment to safety
of ordinary South Africans at sea.
Engen's investment to the Red Cross Children's Hospital Burns Unit operating
theatre underpins our commitment to promoting quality of life, creating greater
awareness of a safe home environment.
Environment
Over the past few decades, the business impact on the natural and social environments
has been closely scrutinised by society, the media and government alike - to such
an extent that environmental impact has become a key measurement of business performance
and reporting and a corporate responsibility imperative. Engen environmental corporate
responsibility is a key focus across the business and is informed by the policies
of our HSE division.
Engen has through its own programmes and business improvements, together with wider
industry and government initiatives, made an increasing contribution to a cleaner
environment and more sustainable business practices. Engen's commitment to support
the Rose Foundation is but one shining example. In addition, the ongoing work with
the communities and schools in the Durban South basin ensures Engen keeps a keen
eye on being a good corporate neighbour.
Engen is also a contributing member of World Wildlife Fund.
