As a performance driven brand, Engen welcomes the opportunity to participate in a performance driven sport such as cycling. Engen entered cycling in 2008 after identifying it as one of the fastest growing sports in South Africa We believe that our presence will positively contribute to the growth and transformation of the sport in South Africa.
Engen announced a series of criterium style cycling festivals in 2014, which were the first of their kind in South Africa. Originating in the USA, these festivals took place in the iconic South African cities of Cape Town, Pretoria, and Durban.
Criterium racing is a short course cycling format designed to bring hard hitting action to spectators. The focus of the events is not only on the fast and furious elite racing categories but also on fun and family participation. The festival environment, with good local market food and entertainment on offer, sees each race take place over 20 – 40 minutes with the highlight of the day being a professional’s race for an hour under the city lights.
Race categories incorporate a “Suit & Tie Corporate Relay” which raises funds for regional Children’s Hospitals, whilst a unique event is the “Fam Glam”, a dress-up event aimed at non-competitive families. A kiddie’s dash for young riders aged between 5 and 10 years old also takes place. A Twilight mass ride for the crowd brings the day’s festivities at each city to a close. Dates for the next ‘Engen Cycle in the City’ are still to be confirmed.
Engen sponosrs a premier cycling television show on Supersport called Engen SuperCycling. The show airs 50 weeks of the year, on Tuesdays from 19h00 – 20h00.
