The Engen Refinery, which is located in Durban, South Africa, primary purpose is to manufacture in the most cost effective, safe and responsible manner, the agreed volume, quality and range of products required to meet the needs of Engen’s customers.

Built in 1954, negotiation, planning and construction had, of course, begun earlier. Much earlier. It was in 1948 in fact that the then Standard-Vacuum Oil Company of South Africa (later renamed as Mobil) approached the South African government with the idea of building the country’s first crude oil refinery.

Negotiations continued for nearly three years and in February 1951 the Standard-Vacuum Oil Refining Company of South Africa was finally registered and plans for the construction of a refinery to the south of Durban Harbour were announced. After exhaustive surveys, land acquisition, and the extensive planning that a project of this kind demands, the first batch of concrete was poured at the Wentworth site on 15 April 1952.

One year and eight months later, the refinery’s Combination Unit, Treating and Blending Units were started up, signifying the beginning of refining operations.

Today, 60 years on, the company can look back on more than half a century of achievement – reflected in a record of growth, constant modernisation, technical excellence, disciplined safety and productive relations with its local community.

The crude refining capacity has grown from just 15 000 barrels per day (bpd) in 1954 to 135 000 bpd today.

The Refinery of today is very different from the one of 1954. It is now a state-of-the-art facility, boasting a sophisticated Process Control Centre, where highly skilled technicians have the plant’s operations at their fingertips 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Engen Refinery is constantly adapting to ensure its success. It has a comprehensive strategy to ensure that Engen’s business is sustainable.

The Engen Refinery is ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) certified.
